Looks like Mexico, and many other countries will be paying for Trump’s Wall after all.
A bill has been introduced by Members of the GOP which is going to impose a 2% fee on the money immigrants send to their relatives back home. However, this type of fee will ONLY be imposed on money sent to countries responsible for illegal immigration.
According to newest reports from Washington Times, a group of House Republicans back on Thursday, first introduced this major bill to fund President Trump’s border wall, stating that the government could potentially collect billions of dollars by imposing a 2% fee on all the money Mexicans as well as other immigrants send back home.
Although estimates vary in numbers, remittances from those in the U.S. to their relatives back home could possibly top $130 billion a year, just by implementing a 2% tax to all money, regardless of who is sending it.
“This bill is simple — anyone who sends their money to countries that benefit from our porous borders and illegal immigration should be responsible for providing some of the funds needed to complete the wall,” said Rep Mike Rogers in a statement. “This bill keeps money in the American economy, and most importantly, it creates a funding stream to build the wall.”
The effort is being lead by Mr. Rogers and Rep. Lou Barletta of Pennsylvania.
President Trump has also made a vow to make Mexico pay the bill for his border wall, however, Mexican authorities have stated that they will not be “playing” along.
As a result of being left without a funding source, the POTUS stated that American taxpayers will have to pick up the tab for now, but he will be on a constant lookout for ways to soak Mexico in the long run.
